CCR oli bändi, jota kuunneltiin luokasta, kansallisuudesta, iästä, sukupuolesta, rodusta - jopa omasta musiikkimausta tai poliittisesta asenteesta riippumatta.

'How fundamentally badass is Creedence Clearwater Revival? They appeal to everybody over the age of embryo and younger than 102. Men and women. Whites, blacks, and all manner of ethnicity in between. Fancypants intellectuals and working class mulletheads. They're beloved for heavy rock songs with big, fat guitar tones, twangy, backporch country, and high, lonesome ballads. They were at heart a "singles" band, yet if you needed 'em to stretch out their choogle to 10+ minutes ... done.' - [ks. linkki]

John Fogertyn hyvä ystävä Bruce Springsteen kertoi, miten heidän kulmillaan New Jerseyssä [Nykin vieressä] Proud Maryn alkaessa soida jukeboxista jokainen tyyppi - kuuluipa sitten mihin tahansa jengiin - lopetti uhoilunsa ja alkoi kuunnella tuota biisiä tapaillen sen rytmiä, sanoja sekä melodiaa. Merkillinen tunnelma - kukaan ei rähissyt kenellekään Proud Maryn aikana.

Proud Mary - Creedence Clearwater Revival
*
Left a good job in the city,
Working for The Man every night and day,
And I never lost one minute of sleeping,
Worrying 'bout the way things might have been.

CHORUS:
Big wheel keep on turning,
Proud Mary keep on burning,
Rolling, rolling, rolling on the river.

Cleaned a lot of plates in Memphis,
Pumped a lot of pane down in New Orleans,
But I never saw the good side of the city,
Until I hitched a ride on a river boat queen.

CHORUS
Rolling, rolling, rolling on the river.

If you come down to the river,
Bet you gonna find some people who live.
You don't have to worry 'cause you have no money,
People on the river are happy to give.

CHORUS
Rolling, rolling, rolling on the river.

Willy and the Poor Boys on temaattisesti yhteiskunnallinen kannanotto. Siinä saavat oman laulunsa niin vangit [The Midnight Special], puuvillanpomijat [Cotton Fields], duunarit [Don't Look Now], Nixon, sotaherrat ja rikas eliitti [Fortunate Son, Effigy] kuin juntit, ufot, kommunistit, paavi, Hollywood ja silloinen Kalifornian kuvernööri 'Ronnie the Popular' eli Ronald Reagan [It Came Out Of The Sky].

Perinteinen shuffle-katusoittaja-bändi WPB/CCR toteutti Johnin musiikillisen mielikuvituksen ideat sympatiaa herättäen ja uskottavasti. Proud Maryn tapaan Down on the Corner'ista huokuu aseista riisuvan positiivista henkeä - aivan kuten myöhemmästä Centerfield'istäkin 1985.

[Interview]'You wrote “Fortunate Son” over 30 years ago and it still rings true, even more so today.'

'I am personally a very political person and of course, the fact that I came of age in the ‘60s…that’s probably not so remarkable. Especially for my generation, the group of people who are now called “boomers,” the late ‘60s was a very remarkable, creative, volatile, tumultuous and wonderful time. I think we literally believed we could change the world and, in some ways, we really did. I was very, very political. The Vietnam War was at its height, and I was very much aware that rich kids were not serving and certainly, lower, middle class and poor people were serving. I certainly took note that Richard Nixon’s offspring…I always had his daughter’s names wrong. I think Tricia was going with David Eisenhower. I thought, they’re never going to Vietnam. So literally in my mind, “A senator’s son” could have been any one of those people. As I said in the late ‘60s, Nixon was a source of unending inspiration [laughs] because he was just so evil to me. It was very noticeable that rich people waged the wars and poor people fought ‘em. The whole business about rich people complaining about taxes but they never pay ‘em…Ronald Regan became the patron saint of that years later. Weren’t there a few years where he paid zero taxes? You thought to yourself, “How in the world can this work” [laughs]? They were fortunate sons. They were the sons of well-heeled and connected people.' - http://www.americansongwriter.com/2007/01/john-fogerty-fortunate-songwriter/

Some folks are born made to wave the flag,
Ooh, they're red, white and blue.
And when the band plays "Hail to the chief",
Ooh, they point the cannon at you, Lord,

It ain't me, it ain't me,
I ain't no senator's son, son.
It ain't me, it ain't me;
I ain't no fortunate one, no,
Yeah!

Some folks are born silver spoon in hand,
Lord, don't they help themselves, oh.
But when the taxman comes to the door,
Lord, the house looks like a rummage sale, yes,

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no millionaire's son, no.
It ain't me, it ain't me;
I ain't no fortunate one, no.

Some folks inherit star spangled eyes,
Ooh, they send you down to war, Lord,
And when you ask them, "How much should we give?"
Ooh, they only answer More! more! more! yoh,

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no military son, son.
It ain't me, it ain't me;
I ain't no fortunate one, one.

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no fortunate one, no no no,
It ain't me, it ain't me,
I ain't no fortunate son, no no no,

Creedence Clearwater Revival - Effigy (1969)
*
"A real heavy political song. It's pointing the finger at the Nixon administration when they were crumbling. The dark period, if you will. We were able to get away with it by having the rhythm section that we had. If you wanted to get heavy and get into it, you could do that. If you didn't want to do that, you could dance all night and pick up a girl or do whatever. We covered all the bases and John would add his brilliant lyrics and took it a step forward." [Doug Clifford, 1988].
*
Last night
I saw a fire burning on
The palace lawn
O'er the land
The humble subjects watched in mixed
Emotion

[Chorus:]
Who is burnin'?
Who is burnin'?

Effigy.
Who is burnin'?
Who is burnin'?
Effigy.

Last night
I saw the fire spreadin' to
The palace door
Silent majority
Weren't keepin' quiet
Anymore

[Chorus]

Last night
I saw the fire spreadin' to
The country side
In the mornin'
Few were left to watch
The ashes die

[Chorus]

Why?
Why?
Why?
Effigy

Creedence Clearwater Revival - Don't Look Now (1969)  - [Tässä Johnin kontribuutio amerikkalaisten työväen laulujen perinteeseen]
*
Who will take the coal from the mine?
Who will take the salt from the earth?
Who'll take a leaf and grow it to a tree?
Don't look now, it ain't you or me

Who will work the field with his hands?
Who will put his back to the plough?
Who'll take the mountain and give it to the sea?
Don't look now, it ain't you or me

[Chorus:]
Don't look now, someone's done your starvin'
Don't look now, someone's done your prayin' too

Who will make the shoes for your feet?
Who will make the clothes that you wear?
Who'll take the promise that you don't have to keep?
Don't look now, it ain't you or me

[Chorus]

Who will take the coal from the mines?
Who will take the salt from the earth?
Who'll take the promise that you don't have to keep?
Don't look now, it ain't you or me

JOHN FOGERTY - SOUTHERN STREAMLINE [1997] - [John on maltillisen liberaali perhekonservatiivinen arvo-demokraatti, joka vastustaa USA:n maailmanpoliisi-politiikkaa. Hän on rock-tähtien 'The Man of the People' jos kuka ;\]

Almost Saturday Night from John Fogerty's second solo album, released in 1975 - [Minun mielestäni tämä on yksi Johnin surullisella tavalla kauneimpia lauluja. Uploadaaja on koonnut hienon kuvasarjan, joka sopii biisin tunnelmaan lähes täydellisesti].
*
Outside my window, I can hear the radio,
And I know that motor wagon is ready to fly,
'Cause it's almost Saturday night.

Bye bye, tomorrow, Jody's gone to the rodeo,
And you know some good old boys are ready to ride,
'Cause it's almost Saturday night.

[Chorus:]
Gonna push the clouds away, let the music have it's way,
Let it steal my heart away, and you know I'm-a-goin'!

Outside the ringing, the night train is bringin' me home,
When you hear that locomotion get ready to ride,
'Cause it's almost Saturday night.

[Chorus]

Outside the ringing, the night train is bringin' me home,
When you hear that locomotion get ready to ride,
'Cause it's almost Saturday night.
Oh yeah!

PS.

2. Minulta taas on mennyt kirjoitusinto nyt hetkeksi ihan kokonaan.

Taidankin kohta avata uuden kaljan ja mennä saunaan.

Leppoisaa lauantaita sinne revisionistien leiriinkin!

T. Revisionisti vastoin tahtoaan ;\]
