CCR, 1970, Lontoo, Royal Albert Hall

.
Tämän paremmaksi kuvan ja etenkin äänen laatua CCR:n Royal Albert Hall konsertista [4/1970] tuskin enää saadaan nykytekniikalla. Kuunnelkaa ja katsokaa vaikka Tombstone Shadow eli 3. kappale alusta laskien. Siihen kuten Born on the Bayou’hin  [aloituskappale] minä en kyllästy ikinä. Mikä kitarasoundi lähteekään Rickenbackerista [*], millainen lauluääni onkaan nuorella John Fogertylla. Tämän vuoksi kannatti elää.
.
[*] Videon lähtökuvassa J. Fogertyn kitarana Gibson Les Paul; veljensä Tom soittaa jotain Gibson 335-tyyppiä.

John Fogerty ja mystinen valtatie nimeltään elämä uudelta albumilta Wrote A Song For Everyone [kuten katsoja voinee päätellä, John ei vieläkään ole antanut anteeksi Saul Zaentzille - eikä pidäkään antaa].

Someday Never Comes

John Fogerty - Someday Never Comes (with Dawes) - David Letterman 5-22-13.
.
Fogerty has stated that the song is about being left and not being able to learn much as a child.
.
"Someday Never Comes" is simply a song about my parents undergoing a divorce when I was a child and me not knowing many things. When my dad left me, he told me to be a man and someday I would understand everything. Now, I'm here basically repeating the same thing really. I had a son in 1966 and I went away when he was five years old or so and again told him "someday" he would understand everything. Really, all kids ask questions like "Daddy, when are we going fishing?" and parents always answer with "someday", but in reality someday never comes and kids never learn what they're supposed to learn. [John Fogerty 1973]
*
First thing I remember was asking papa, why,
For there were many things I didn't know.
And daddy always smiled and took me by the hand,
Saying, someday you'll understand.

[Chorus]
Well, I'm here to tell you now, each and every mother's son,
That you better learn it fast, you better learn it young,
'Cause someday never comes.

Well, time and tears went by and I collected dust.
For there were many things I didn't know.
When daddy went away, he said, try to be a man,
And someday you'll understand.

Well, I'm here to tell you now, each and every mother's son,
That you better learn it fast, you better learn it young,
'Cause someday never comes.

And then one day in April, I wasn't even there,
For there were many things I didn't know.
A son was born to me. Mama held his hand,
Sayin' someday you'll understand.

Well, I'm here to tell you now, each and every mother's son,
That you better learn it fast, you better learn it young,
'Cause someday never comes
Ooo someday never comes.

Think it was September, the year I went away,
For there were many things I didn't know.
And still I see him standing, tryin' to be a man,
I said, someday you'll understand.

Well, I'm here to tell you now, each and every mother's son,
That you better learn it fast, you better learn it young,
'Cause someday never comes
Ooo someday never comes.

Wrote a Song for Everyone
.
John Fogerty: Wrote a Song for Everyone. Vanguard/Sony, 2013
.
Niistä Train of Fools voi ajan mittaan hyvinkin nousta Fogerty-klassikoksi.
.
PS./RR
Fogertyn kaikkein suurimpiin klassikoihin kuuluva mutta melko vähän tunnettu Some day never comes [onnettoman epätasaiselta trio-CCR:n Mardi Gras-albumilta, 1972] on saanut viimeinkin arvoisensa sovituksen tällä tosiaankin erinomaisella albumilla. No - kyllä tältä levyltä löytyy etenkin vierailevien artistien myös loistavia ja 'monimutkaisia' kitarasooloja [Fotunate Son/Foo Fighters; Wrote a song for everyone/Tom Morello: mm. Rage against the Machine ja Bruce Springsteen Band 2013; Hot rod heart/Brad Paisley].

john fogerty "wrote a song for everyone" new album 28/05/2013

[....]

For any songs redone on the new album, were you unsatisfied with the original versions?
.
Some of these I think are better. "Someday Never Comes" I think is a lot better. Dawes is a great band. Some of that is my fault – I made some choices on the original, just how I sang. My singing is a little flat on the humming part. Ouch. Creedence had already broken up in one form, and I probably wasn't feeling real great in those times.
When the original was being recorded, I really wanted it to kick ass when it got to "Well, I'm gonna tell ya, now . . . !" and it didn't quite do that on the original. This time it does. That wasn't the reason for doing this. It was to revisit and take a fresh approach.

'Long As I Can See The Light' (live) - John Fogerty (Creedence Clearwater Revival). (Night of the Proms 2010 - Belgium/Netherlands).

Put a candle in the window, but I feel I've got to move.
Though I'm going, going, I'll be coming home soon,
'Long as I can see the light.

Pack my bag and let's get movin', 'cause I'm bound to drift a while.
Well I'm gone, gone, you don't have to worry no,
'Long as I can see the light.

Guess I've got that old trav'lin' bone,
'cause this feelin' won't leave me alone.
But I won't, won't be losin' my way, no, no
'Long as I can see the light.

Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Oh, Yeah!

Put a candle in the window, 'cause I feel I've got to move.
Though I'm going, going, I'll be coming home soon,
Long as I can see the light.

By the way, minulla on vähän sellainen kutina, että Fantasy Records kohtapuoleen poistattaa tämän platinaa jo myyneen videon You Tubesta. Laittomastihan se siellä on. Fogerty tosin oli jo 2004 palannut halukkaasti ja uusien omistajien sankarina heti takaisin Fantasyyn, kun Saul Saentz myi firman pois kuleksimasta käsistään. Taisi vanhuus alkaa jo miestä vaivata. Saulhan on nykyään peräti 91v. Sitkeä juutalainen bisnesöky. Menee vaikka letkuissa 'luvattuun maahan'. Ei ole rahasta kiinni. Noh - kiertoon se menee Sauli kuten kaikki muutkin. Matoa kun ei voi lahjoa millään hinnalla. Ainakaan toistaiseksi. Kannattaa tsekata.Tämä on hyvä keikka.

'Blow away the dreams that tear you apart, blow away the dreams that break your heart, blow away the dreams that leave you nothing but lost and broken hearted' - - 'And I believe in a promised land'.

Bruce Springsteen The Promised Land with John Fogerty London 14-07-12 Hard Rock Calling

 *

On a rattlesnake speedway in the Utah desert
I pick up my money and head back into town
Driving cross the Waynesboro county line
I got the radio on and I'm just killing time
Working all day in my daddy's garage
Driving all night chasing some mirage
Pretty soon little girl I'm gonna take charge
.
The dogs on Main Street howl 'cause they understand
If I could take one moment into my hands
Mister I ain't a boy, no I'm a man
And I believe in a promised land
.
I've done my best to live the right way
I get up every morning and go to work each day
But your eyes go blind and your blood runs cold
Sometimes I feel so weak I just want to explode
Explode and tear this whole town apart
Take a knife and cut this pain from my heart
Find somebody itching for something to start
.
The dogs on Main Street howl 'cause they understand
If I could reach one moment into my hands
Mister I ain't a boy, no I'm a man
And I believe in a promised land
.
Well there's a dark cloud rising from the desert floor
I packed my bags and I'm heading straight into the storm
Gonna be a twister to blow everything down
That ain't got the faith to stand its ground
Blow away the dreams that tear you apart
Blow away the dreams that break your heart
Blow away the lies that leave you nothing but lost and brokenhearted
.
Well the dogs on Main Street howl 'cause they understand
If I could take one moment into my hands
Mister I ain't a boy, no I'm a man
And I believe in a promised land

Creedence Clearwater Revival - Live at Royal Albert Hall 1970 [HD]

Cocksucker blues

Cocksucker is 1] someone who sucks a man's penis or 2] a very stupid person.
*

Rolling Stones - Cocksucker blues

....
Hehheh. Stonesit [etenkin taloutta nuorempana opiskellut Jagger, jonka luottamuksen Klein petti] saivat kostonsa. Meitä ei kuseteta ja kiristetä lahjaksi. Deccan pomoja on varmaan hetken aikaa vi.....anut aika raskaasti. Luulivat kai saavansa rahakkaan hittibiisin.
....
Satunnainen kommentaattori kertoo:
'This song has nothing really to do with sexuality, it was the last song they owed Decca. The Stones were going to leave the contract owing one song, Decca said they would keep the Stones in court forever. Mick and the boys threw up their hands and gave Decca a song they could not possibly release, BUT still fullfilling the contract'

(Jagger/Richards)

Well, I'm a lonesome schoolboy
And I just came into town
Yeah, I'm a lonesome schoolboy
And I just came into town
Well, I heard so much about London
I decided to check it out

Well, I wait in Leicester Square
With a come-hither look in my eye
Yeah, I'm leaning on Nelsons Column
But all I do is talk to the lions

Oh where can I get my cock sucked?
Where can I get my ass fucked?
I may have no money,
But I know where to put it every time

Well, I asked a young policeman
If he'd only lock me up for the night
Well, I've had pigs in the farmyard,
Some of them, some of them, they're alright
Well, he fucked me with his truncheon
And his helmet was way too tight

Oh where can I get my cock sucked?
Where can I get my ass fucked?
I ain't got no money,
But I know where to put it every time

I'm a lonesome schoolboy in your town
I'm a lonesome schoolboy

'In 1965, [Allen] Klein became the co-manager of The Rolling Stones. In 1966 Klein bought Andrew Loog Oldham's share of the Rolling Stones' management, though Oldham continued in his role as the band's producer until late 1967. Mick Jagger had studied at the London School of Economics and was sufficiently impressed with Klein's business acumen to recommend him to Paul McCartney.

Not long afterwards though, Jagger started to doubt Klein's trustworthiness. The Stones decided to fire Klein, and set up their own business structure in 1970. Klein sued, and the legal settlement meant giving Klein the rights to most of their songs recorded before 1971. Keith Richards later described the settlement and Klein's time with the group as 'the price of an education.' [....]

II
Jack Bruce The Telegraphin haastattelussa 12/2011

My first mistake was to have a bad manager. He basically used every trick in the book to steal our money and siphon it off into his own pockets. It was easy do with young musicians who were naive and didn't care about contracts. I think it happened a lot in those days. Today there is usually a clause in most contracts warning you to get independent advice, but in those days there would usually be a clause forbidding you to get independent advice.

Green river

John Fogerty ja Green river-albumin takakansi [8/1969], jonka ylimääräiset bonus-raidat [10-14] on lisätty kyseiseen cd-julkaisuun yli 30-vuotta myöhemmin.

I
Creedence Clearwater Revival, which disbanded in 1972, were progressive and anachronistic at the same time. An unapologetic throwback to the golden era of rock and roll, they broke ranks with their peers on the progressive, psychedelic San Francisco scene. Their approach was basic and uncompromising, holding true to the band members' working-class origins. The term 'roots rock' had not yet been invented when Creedence came along, but in a real way they defined it, drawing inspiration from the likes of Little Richard, Hank Williams, Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry and the artisans of soul at Motown and Stax. In so doing, Creedence Clearwater Revival became the standard bearers and foremost celebrants of homegrown American music.

John Fogerty - Green River - - [live HD audio from the Beacon Theater in New York, November 18, 2011/- Fogerty aloittaa biisin kohdassa 1.45].
*
GREEN RIVER - This is one of my favorite songs. When I was quite young my family use to travel to a little campsite by a little river in Northern California. Part of the lore was that the old man we saw occasionally was a direct descendant of Buffalo Bill Cody.. (son or grandson?.. he was like, ninety and this was 1949!). I loved it there and this place has informed what I feel is important ever since. At about the age of eight, I became fascinated with the label on a soda fountain drink and it came to represent the whole mystical dimension of youth, freedom, nature, exploration, and life “on the river”- [John Fogerty].

Lyrics

Well, take me back down where cool water flows, yeah.
Let me remember things I love,
Stoppin' at the log where catfish bite,
Walkin' along the river road at night,
Barefoot girls dancin' in the moonlight.

I can hear the bullfrog callin' me.
Wonder if my rope's still hangin' to the tree.
Love to kick my feet 'way down the shallow water.
Shoefly, dragonfly, get back t'your mother.
Pick up a flat rock, skip it across Green River.

Up at Cody's camp I spent my days, oh,
With flat car riders and cross-tie walkers.
Old Cody, Junior took me over,
Said, "You're gonna find the world is smould'rin'.
And if you get lost come on home to Green River."

Come on home.

Bad moon rising

John Fogerty - Bad Moon Rising - - [live HD audio from the Beacon Theater in New York, November 18, 2011/- biisi alkaa kohdasta 1.13].
*
BAD MOON RISING - I think I knew I was going to write this song for a long time. There is an old black and white movie called “The Devil and Daniel Webster”. In this classic story a farmer is down on his luck and the Devil shows up and offers to make the man successful beyond his wildest dreams. There is only one catch… the man has to agree to give the Devil his soul. Of course, the farmer says yes. Soon after, there is a great storm, a hurricane really, that lasts all night while the farmer cowers in his barn. The next morning, he awakens to see devastation everywhere. All the crops of his neighbors are smashed completely into the ground and yet his crops are straight up to the sky. That scene made a big impression on me - [John Fogerty].

Lyrics

I see the bad moon arising
I see trouble on the way
I see earthquakes and lightnin'
I see bad times today

CHORUS:
Don't go around tonight
Well, it's bound to take your life
There's a bad moon on the rise

[Huom. Johnilla on tapana laulaa jossain kohtaa 'väärinkuultuna' there's a bathroom on the right -  yleensä toiseksi viimeisessä kertosäkeessä].

I hear hurricanes ablowing
I know the end is coming soon
I fear rivers over flowing
I hear the voice of rage and ruin

CHORUS
Hope you got your things together
Hope you are quite prepared to die
Looks like we're in for nasty weather
One eye is taken for an eye

CHORUS x 2

The night time is the right time

John Fogerty lavalla CCR:n kukoistuksen vuosina 1969-70.

I
The backwoods yowl that put the fire into Creedence Clearwater Revival's gritty late-Sixties hits like "Green River" and "Proud Mary" actually was not, as the man says, Born on the bayou. John Fogerty's abrasive baritone didn't even come naturally at first - [itse asiassa Johnin ääni on alunperin ja myös nykyään melko puhdas korkea baritoni tai matala tenori, joten CCR-aikojen raspikurkkuisuus oli kovan harjoituksen tai pikemminkin jopa äänenrääkkäyksen ja osittain myös tupakoinnin tulosta/RR]. - "In '64, I got a job playing in a club, and I had a tape recorder with me," he recalls. "I would record the whole night and then listen to myself back, and every day I would try to force myself to get that sound that was in my head." He was trying to channel the voices of blues singers like Howlin' Wolf and Bo Diddley that he heard on the radio in his hometown of El Cerrito, California. "As a kid, there was that point I realized the stuff I liked was more dangerous than the stuff my parents liked," he says. "It was that threatening sound."

THE NIGHT TIME IS THE RIGHT TIME - First of all, let me just say I LOVE Ray Charles! Incredible singing, great songs, great playing, great band… you get the idea. There is an album by Ray somewhere, out there. It used to be called “In Person”. It was recorded almost accidentally with the simplest of equipment. It is, in my opinion, the greatest live album EVER recorded. Get it. Anyway, this song is one of the great songs on Ray’s record and a song I have been performing since high school - [John Fogerty].

Lyrics - [säv./san. Herman, Cadena, Brown]

You know the night time, oh, is the right time
To be with the one you love.
I said the night time, ooh, is the right time
To be with the one you love.
I said the night time, ooh, is the right time
To be with the one you love.

Baby, I said a baby, Baby, come on and drive me crazy, Lord,
You know I love you; always thinkin' of you.
Hey, baby; oh, I said a baby.
You know the night time is the right time
To be with the one you love.

I said the night time oh, is the right time
To be with the one you love.
I said the night time, ooh, is the right time
To be with the one you love.
I said the night time oh, is the right time
To be with the one you love

COMMOTION - I love to play the train beat. It’s not so obvious in this song but that’s where it started. Even forty years ago, I was irritated by the fast pace and rapidly increasing information overload of modern life - [John Fogerty].

Lyrics

Traffic in the city turns my head around.
No, no, no, no, no.
Backed up on the freeway, backed up in the church,
Ev'rywhere you look there's a frown, frown.

Chorus:
Com, commotion,
Git, git, git, gone.
Com, commotion,
Git, git, git, gone.

People keep atalkin', they don't say a word.
Jaw, jaw, jaw, jaw, jaw.
Talk up in the White House, talk up to your door,
So much goin' on I just can't hear.

Chorus

Hurryin' to get there so you save some time.
Run, run, run, run, run.
Rushin' to the treadmill, rushin' to get home,
Worry 'bout the time you save, save.

Chorus

I'm just a cross-tie walker, where the freight trains run

Grand Canyon Railway steam locomotive #18

Cross-Tie Walker is a colorful description of a tramp or hobo, who when they aren't 'flat-car riders' (hopping trains to travel across the countryside), they are 'cross-tie walkers' walking on the rails waiting for a train.

*
CROSS-TIE WALKER - Well, here it is then. I love trains. I love stories about trains. I love to watch trains. And especially, I love songs about trains! When I was quite young, we were stopped in our family car, at a Railroad Crossing. It was a long, long train. I think we were somewhere in Montana where my parents came from. My Dad made a point of telling me that the engine was one of those very old and rare engines that you probably won’t see much anymore. It was a steam engine from by-gone days and this romantic and mythic vision has inspired me throughout my life. Thanks, Dad - [John Fogerty].

Lyrics

I went down to the station, just to take a ride. I
went down to the station, just to take a ride.
Found myself on a flatcar, yesterday behind.

Pullin' out from the platform, there was no brass
band. I pulled out from the platform, nobody
raised a hand. And there were no tears of regret
from my runaway train. Train, train, train, train.

Got no sand in my pocket, you know I ain't tied
down. Ain't no sand in my pocket, never do sit
down. I'm just a cross-tie walker, where the
freight trains run. Run, run, run, run.

If you see me acomin', don't you waste my time.
If you see me acomin', don't you waste my time.
'Cause there's more miles between us than the
Santa Fe Line. Run, run, run, run.

John Fogerty - Lodi - - [live HD audio from the Beacon Theater in New York, November 18, 2011].
*
LODI - This is another song title that I had carried around since my childhood, somehow knowing that I would someday write a song about it. I just liked the sound of it. Funny thing is though my family had traveled all around Northern California when I was young, I’m pretty sure that I had never been to Lodi - [John Fogerty].

Lyrics

Just about a year ago, I set out on the road,
Seekin' my fame and fortune, lookin' for a pot of gold.
Things got bad, and things got worse, I guess you will know the tune.
Oh ! Lord, stuck in Lodi again.

Rode in on the Greyhound, I'll be walkin' out if I go.
I was just passin' through, must be seven months or more.
Ran out of time and money, looks like they took my friends.
Oh ! Lord, I'm stuck in Lodi again.

The man from the magazine said I was on my way.
Somewhere I lost connections, ran out of songs to play.
I came into town, a one night stand, looks like my plans fell through
Oh ! Lord, stuck in Lodi again.

If I only had a dollar, for ev'ry song I've sung.
And ev'ry time I've had to play while people sat there drunk.
You know, I'd catch the next train back to where I live.
Oh ! Lord, I'm stuck in Lodi again.

John Fogerty Twitters A History of the Green River Album While Playing It in New York [Saturday, November 19, 2011]

John Fogerty has been a very active user of Twitter over the years and, Friday night [18.11.2011], he used the social network to fill in his audience at the Beacon Theater, and the rest of the world, on a history of the album Green River.

The concert is the second of two nights at the Beacon where he played Cosmos Factory in its entirety on Thursday and Green River on Friday. The following are his tweets with his thoughts on each of the cuts.

At about the age of eight, I became fascinated with the label on a soda fountain drink and it came to represent the whole mystical dimension of youth, freedom, nature, exploration, and life “on the river”.

COMMOTION - I love to play the train beat. It’s not so obvious in this song but that’s where it started. Even forty years ago, I was irritated by the fast pace and rapidly increasing information overload of modern life.

TOMBSTONE SHADOW - Sometime early in 1969, I played a show in San Bernadino, California. Right across the street from the hotel there was a little shop advertising “Fortune Teller”. I went in and got my fortune read. This song is a note for note replay of that experience.

WROTE A SONG FOR EVERYONE - The late sixties was, of course, a time of great turmoil in America and around the world. Politically and socially this new energy seemed to be affecting everything. As some of this conflict played out in our media you could watch famous people from the older generation having trouble communicating with the younger generation. I had in mind a so-called leader of millions who couldn’t even lead his own son.

That scene made a big impression on me.

LODI - This is another song title that I had carried around since my childhood, somehow knowing that I would someday write a song about it. I just liked the sound of it. Funny thing is though my family had traveled all around Northern California when I was young, I’m pretty sure that I had never been to Lodi.

It was a steam engine from by-gone days and this romantic and mythic vision has inspired me throughout my life. Thanks, Dad.

SINISTER PURPOSE - Ahhhh. A song about de Devil. I don’t believe I have ever played this live before.

THE NIGHT TIME IS THE RIGHT TIME - First of all, let me just say I LOVE Ray Charles! Incredible singing, great songs, great playing, great band… you get the idea. Lyrics

Met myself a comin' county welfare line.
I was feelin' strung out, Hung out on the line.
Saw myself a goin', down to war in June.
All I want, All I want is to write myself a tune.

CHORUS:
Wrote A Song For Ev'ryone,
Wrote a song for truth.
Wrote A Song For Ev'ryone
And I couldn't even talk to you.

Got myself arrested, Wound me up in jail.
Richmond 'bout to blow up, Communication failed.
If you see the answer, now's the time to say.
All I want, All I want is to get you down to pray.

CHORUS

Saw the people standin' thousand years in chains.
Somebody said it's diff'rent now, look, it's just the same.
Pharoahs spin the message, round and round the truth.
They could have saved a million people, How can I tell you?

CHORUS

Lyrics

Tombstone Shadow, stretchin' across my path.
Tombstone Shadow, stretchin' across my path.
Ev'ry time I get some good news, ooh,
There's a shadow on my back.

Saw the gypsy man, 'way down in San Berdoo.
Said, I saw the gypsy man, 'way down in San Berdoo.
Five dollars on the table, ooh,
Keep me 'way from my tomb.

Said I got thirteen months of bad luck,
Bound to be some pain.
Don't you do no travelin',
Fly in no machines.
Tombstone Shadow, stretchin' across my path.
Ev'ry time I get some good news, ooh,
There's a shadow on my back.

The man gave me a luck charm, cost five dollars more,
Said, "Put some on your pillow, and put some on your door."
He said, "Take a long vacation, ooh,
For thirteen months or more."

Tombstone Shadow, stretchin' across my path.
Tombstone Shadow, stretchin' across my path.
Ev'ry time I get some good news, ooh,
There's a shadow on my back
