Grand Canyon Railway steam locomotive #18

Cross-Tie Walker is a colorful description of a tramp or hobo, who when they aren't 'flat-car riders' (hopping trains to travel across the countryside), they are 'cross-tie walkers' walking on the rails waiting for a train.

CROSS-TIE WALKER - Well, here it is then. I love trains. I love stories about trains. I love to watch trains. And especially, I love songs about trains! When I was quite young, we were stopped in our family car, at a Railroad Crossing. It was a long, long train. I think we were somewhere in Montana where my parents came from. My Dad made a point of telling me that the engine was one of those very old and rare engines that you probably won’t see much anymore. It was a steam engine from by-gone days and this romantic and mythic vision has inspired me throughout my life. Thanks, Dad - [John Fogerty].
Lyrics
I went down to the station, just to take a ride. I
went down to the station, just to take a ride.
Found myself on a flatcar, yesterday behind.
Pullin' out from the platform, there was no brass
band. I pulled out from the platform, nobody
raised a hand. And there were no tears of regret
from my runaway train. Train, train, train, train.
Got no sand in my pocket, you know I ain't tied
down. Ain't no sand in my pocket, never do sit
down. I'm just a cross-tie walker, where the
freight trains run. Run, run, run, run.
If you see me acomin', don't you waste my time.
If you see me acomin', don't you waste my time.
'Cause there's more miles between us than the
Santa Fe Line. Run, run, run, run.
