CCR, 1970, Lontoo, Royal Albert Hall

.
Tämän paremmaksi kuvan ja etenkin äänen laatua CCR:n Royal Albert Hall konsertista [4/1970] tuskin enää saadaan nykytekniikalla. Kuunnelkaa ja katsokaa vaikka Tombstone Shadow eli 3. kappale alusta laskien. Siihen kuten Born on the Bayou’hin  [aloituskappale] minä en kyllästy ikinä. Mikä kitarasoundi lähteekään Rickenbackerista [*], millainen lauluääni onkaan nuorella John Fogertylla. Tämän vuoksi kannatti elää.
.
[*] Videon lähtökuvassa J. Fogertyn kitarana Gibson Les Paul; veljensä Tom soittaa jotain Gibson 335-tyyppiä.

Mystinen valtatie

John Fogerty ja mystinen valtatie nimeltään elämä uudelta albumilta Wrote A Song For Everyone [kuten katsoja voinee päätellä, John ei vieläkään ole antanut anteeksi Saul Zaentzille - eikä pidäkään antaa].

Niin pitkään kuin voin nähdä valon

'Long As I Can See The Light' (live) - John Fogerty (Creedence Clearwater Revival). (Night of the Proms 2010 - Belgium/Netherlands).
*
Put a candle in the window, but I feel I've got to move.
Though I'm going, going, I'll be coming home soon,
'Long as I can see the light.

Pack my bag and let's get movin', 'cause I'm bound to drift a while.
Well I'm gone, gone, you don't have to worry no,
'Long as I can see the light.

Guess I've got that old trav'lin' bone,
'cause this feelin' won't leave me alone.
But I won't, won't be losin' my way, no, no
'Long as I can see the light.

Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Oh, Yeah!

Put a candle in the window, 'cause I feel I've got to move.
Though I'm going, going, I'll be coming home soon,
Long as I can see the light.

Creedence Clearwater Revival - Live at Royal Albert Hall 1970 [HD]

.
Encoren puuttuminen jonkinlaisena protestina levy-yhtiön [Johnin kannalta surkean royalty-sopimuksen] ja keikkajärjestäjien suuntaan osui valitettavasti väärään maaliin, kuten rumpali Doug Clifford sanoi.
.
Hieman kärjistäen voidaan silti sanoa, että CCR oli John Fogertylle Green Riveristä lähtien yhä suuremmassa määrin have you ever seen the rain comin’ down on a sunny day: – Pendulum-LP:n biisi, joka kertoo CCR:n hajoamisesta [Tom Fogerty oli ilmoittanut veljelleen eroavansa musiikillisten erimielisyyksien takia].
.
Päättäväisyys [pahimmillaan silkka itsepäisyys], lahjakkuus [tunnistettava oma tyyli ja ääni] ja etenkin onnekas sattuma ihmissuhteessa vuosia myöhemmin [toinen vaimo Julie] estivät John Fogertya vajoamasta lopullisesti siihen katkeruuden suohon, josta Eye of the Zombie-LP:n [1986] eräät kappaleet ovat niin ilmeisiä todisteita.
.
PS.

Lurps! - - One possible signature of a Higgs boson from a simulated proton–proton collision. It decays almost immediately into two jets of hadrons and two electrons, visible as lines.

Kirjoitettu Ironmistressin päreeseen Maailmankaikkeuden perimmäisillä rajoilla 'Tiedemiehen' ylevän ja kohottavan kommentin innoittamana.
*
*
No voi herrajumala miten harras tunnelma täällä vallitsee! Ihan kuin kirkossa. Onko Jeesus syntynyt uudelleen? Higgsin hiukkasena?
??!! - - Hmm. - - Mutta kylläpä onkin herkkää. Ihan taitaa tirahtaa kyynel minunkin silmäkulmaani - - niisk - - .
Resitatiivina. Olenhan ortodoksi [syystä, jota en aina ymmärrä, vaikka sen tiedänkin].
*
'Pyhä pyhä pyhä olet sinä Higgs, joka tulit Cernin putkesta tänne ihmisten keskelle - - me palvomme sinua ikuisesti oi sinä pyhä pyhä Hiukkanen - - anna meille loistaa valosi Alku-Ei-Mistään ja näytä meille Todellisuus-Olemassaolon syntymisen salat, jotta voisimme kokea kaikkein suurimman nautinnon, minkä ihminen elämässään koskaan saattaa kohdata - - tuntemattoman aineen perimmäisen olomuodon paljastumisen olemassaolevaksi ilman mentaalisia sisältöjä, ilman representatiivista tietoisuutta, pelkkänä fysikaalisena rakenteena - - tuosta vain kuin itsestään se muuttui olemassaolevaksi todeksi - - putkesta tuli kuin maailmankaikkeuden itsensä valmiiksi hautoma kvantti-sikiö - - pelastajamme - Messiaamme - Jumalamme - Hiukkanen - - polvistukaamme kaikki olemassaolevan, elävän ja aineen perimmäisen olomuodon paljastavan Hiukkasen edessä - - pelastuksemme tähden - - Amen.'

Creedence Clearwater Revival - It Came Out of the Sky
*
Oh, it came out of the sky, landed just a little south of Moline
Jody fell out of his tractor, couldn't b'lieve what he seen
Laid on the ground and shook, fearin' for his life
Then he ran all the way to town screamin' "It came out of the sky."

Well, a crowd gathered 'round and a scientist said it was marsh gas
Spiro came and made a speech about raising the Mars tax
The Vatican said, "Woe, the Lord has come"
Hollywood rushed out an epic film
And Ronnie the Popular said it was a communist plot

Oh, the newspapers came and made Jody a national hero
Walter and Eric said they'd put him on a network T.V. show
The White House said, "Put the thing in the Blue Room"
The Vatican said, "No, it belongs to Rome."
And Jody said, "It's mine and you can have it for seventeen million."

Oh, it came out of the sky, landed just a little south of Moline
Jody fell out of his tractor, couldn't b'lieve what he seen
Laid on the ground a shakin', fearin' for his life
Then he ran all the way to town screamin' "It came out of the sky."

Green river

John Fogerty ja Green river-albumin takakansi [8/1969], jonka ylimääräiset bonus-raidat [10-14] on lisätty kyseiseen cd-julkaisuun yli 30-vuotta myöhemmin.

I
Creedence Clearwater Revival, which disbanded in 1972, were progressive and anachronistic at the same time. An unapologetic throwback to the golden era of rock and roll, they broke ranks with their peers on the progressive, psychedelic San Francisco scene. Their approach was basic and uncompromising, holding true to the band members' working-class origins. The term 'roots rock' had not yet been invented when Creedence came along, but in a real way they defined it, drawing inspiration from the likes of Little Richard, Hank Williams, Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry and the artisans of soul at Motown and Stax. In so doing, Creedence Clearwater Revival became the standard bearers and foremost celebrants of homegrown American music.

*
GREEN RIVER - This is one of my favorite songs. When I was quite young my family use to travel to a little campsite by a little river in Northern California. Part of the lore was that the old man we saw occasionally was a direct descendant of Buffalo Bill Cody.. (son or grandson?.. he was like, ninety and this was 1949!). I loved it there and this place has informed what I feel is important ever since. At about the age of eight, I became fascinated with the label on a soda fountain drink and it came to represent the whole mystical dimension of youth, freedom, nature, exploration, and life “on the river”- [John Fogerty].

Lyrics

Well, take me back down where cool water flows, yeah.
Let me remember things I love,
Stoppin' at the log where catfish bite,
Walkin' along the river road at night,
Barefoot girls dancin' in the moonlight.

I can hear the bullfrog callin' me.
Wonder if my rope's still hangin' to the tree.
Love to kick my feet 'way down the shallow water.
Shoefly, dragonfly, get back t'your mother.
Pick up a flat rock, skip it across Green River.

Up at Cody's camp I spent my days, oh,
With flat car riders and cross-tie walkers.
Old Cody, Junior took me over,
Said, "You're gonna find the world is smould'rin'.
And if you get lost come on home to Green River."

Come on home.

Bad moon rising

John Fogerty - Bad Moon Rising - - [live HD audio from the Beacon Theater in New York, November 18, 2011/- biisi alkaa kohdasta 1.13].
*
BAD MOON RISING - I think I knew I was going to write this song for a long time. There is an old black and white movie called “The Devil and Daniel Webster”. In this classic story a farmer is down on his luck and the Devil shows up and offers to make the man successful beyond his wildest dreams. There is only one catch… the man has to agree to give the Devil his soul. Of course, the farmer says yes. Soon after, there is a great storm, a hurricane really, that lasts all night while the farmer cowers in his barn. The next morning, he awakens to see devastation everywhere. All the crops of his neighbors are smashed completely into the ground and yet his crops are straight up to the sky. That scene made a big impression on me - [John Fogerty].

Lyrics

I see the bad moon arising
I see trouble on the way
I see earthquakes and lightnin'
I see bad times today

CHORUS:
Don't go around tonight
Well, it's bound to take your life
There's a bad moon on the rise

[Huom. Johnilla on tapana laulaa jossain kohtaa 'väärinkuultuna' there's a bathroom on the right -  yleensä toiseksi viimeisessä kertosäkeessä].

I hear hurricanes ablowing
I know the end is coming soon
I fear rivers over flowing
I hear the voice of rage and ruin

CHORUS
Hope you got your things together
Hope you are quite prepared to die
Looks like we're in for nasty weather
One eye is taken for an eye

CHORUS x 2

The night time is the right time

John Fogerty lavalla CCR:n kukoistuksen vuosina 1969-70.

I
The backwoods yowl that put the fire into Creedence Clearwater Revival's gritty late-Sixties hits like "Green River" and "Proud Mary" actually was not, as the man says, Born on the bayou. John Fogerty's abrasive baritone didn't even come naturally at first - [itse asiassa Johnin ääni on alunperin ja myös nykyään melko puhdas korkea baritoni tai matala tenori, joten CCR-aikojen raspikurkkuisuus oli kovan harjoituksen tai pikemminkin jopa äänenrääkkäyksen ja osittain myös tupakoinnin tulosta/RR]. - "In '64, I got a job playing in a club, and I had a tape recorder with me," he recalls. "I would record the whole night and then listen to myself back, and every day I would try to force myself to get that sound that was in my head." He was trying to channel the voices of blues singers like Howlin' Wolf and Bo Diddley that he heard on the radio in his hometown of El Cerrito, California. "As a kid, there was that point I realized the stuff I liked was more dangerous than the stuff my parents liked," he says. "It was that threatening sound."

John Fogerty - The Night Time Is the Right Time - - [live HD audio from the Beacon Theater in New York, November 18, 2011/- biisi alkaa kohdasta 1.50].
*
THE NIGHT TIME IS THE RIGHT TIME - First of all, let me just say I LOVE Ray Charles! Incredible singing, great songs, great playing, great band… you get the idea. There is an album by Ray somewhere, out there. It used to be called “In Person”. It was recorded almost accidentally with the simplest of equipment. It is, in my opinion, the greatest live album EVER recorded. Get it. Anyway, this song is one of the great songs on Ray’s record and a song I have been performing since high school - [John Fogerty].

Lyrics - [säv./san. Herman, Cadena, Brown]

You know the night time, oh, is the right time
To be with the one you love.
I said the night time, ooh, is the right time
To be with the one you love.
I said the night time, ooh, is the right time
To be with the one you love.

Baby, I said a baby, Baby, come on and drive me crazy, Lord,
You know I love you; always thinkin' of you.
Hey, baby; oh, I said a baby.
You know the night time is the right time
To be with the one you love.

I said the night time oh, is the right time
To be with the one you love.
I said the night time, ooh, is the right time
To be with the one you love.
I said the night time oh, is the right time
To be with the one you love

John Fogerty - Commotion - - [live HD audio from the Beacon Theater in New York, November 18, 2011].
*
COMMOTION - I love to play the train beat. It’s not so obvious in this song but that’s where it started. Even forty years ago, I was irritated by the fast pace and rapidly increasing information overload of modern life - [John Fogerty].

Lyrics

Traffic in the city turns my head around.
No, no, no, no, no.
Backed up on the freeway, backed up in the church,
Ev'rywhere you look there's a frown, frown.

Chorus:
Com, commotion,
Git, git, git, gone.
Com, commotion,
Git, git, git, gone.

People keep atalkin', they don't say a word.
Jaw, jaw, jaw, jaw, jaw.
Talk up in the White House, talk up to your door,
So much goin' on I just can't hear.

Chorus

Hurryin' to get there so you save some time.
Run, run, run, run, run.
Rushin' to the treadmill, rushin' to get home,
Worry 'bout the time you save, save.

Chorus

I'm just a cross-tie walker, where the freight trains run

Cross-Tie Walker is a colorful description of a tramp or hobo, who when they aren't 'flat-car riders' (hopping trains to travel across the countryside), they are 'cross-tie walkers' walking on the rails waiting for a train.

John Fogerty - Cross-Tie Walker - - [Live HD audio from the Beacon Theater in New York, November 18, 2011/- biisi alkaa kohdasta 1.15].
*
CROSS-TIE WALKER - Well, here it is then. I love trains. I love stories about trains. I love to watch trains. And especially, I love songs about trains! When I was quite young, we were stopped in our family car, at a Railroad Crossing. It was a long, long train. I think we were somewhere in Montana where my parents came from. My Dad made a point of telling me that the engine was one of those very old and rare engines that you probably won’t see much anymore. It was a steam engine from by-gone days and this romantic and mythic vision has inspired me throughout my life. Thanks, Dad - [John Fogerty].

Lyrics

I went down to the station, just to take a ride. I
went down to the station, just to take a ride.
Found myself on a flatcar, yesterday behind.

Pullin' out from the platform, there was no brass
band. I pulled out from the platform, nobody
raised a hand. And there were no tears of regret
from my runaway train. Train, train, train, train.

Got no sand in my pocket, you know I ain't tied
down. Ain't no sand in my pocket, never do sit
down. I'm just a cross-tie walker, where the
freight trains run. Run, run, run, run.

If you see me acomin', don't you waste my time.
If you see me acomin', don't you waste my time.
'Cause there's more miles between us than the
Santa Fe Line. Run, run, run, run.

John Fogerty - Lodi - - [live HD audio from the Beacon Theater in New York, November 18, 2011].

LODI - This is another song title that I had carried around since my childhood, somehow knowing that I would someday write a song about it. I just liked the sound of it. Funny thing is though my family had traveled all around Northern California when I was young, I’m pretty sure that I had never been to Lodi - [John Fogerty].

Lyrics

Just about a year ago, I set out on the road,
Seekin' my fame and fortune, lookin' for a pot of gold.
Things got bad, and things got worse, I guess you will know the tune.
Oh ! Lord, stuck in Lodi again.

Rode in on the Greyhound, I'll be walkin' out if I go.
I was just passin' through, must be seven months or more.
Ran out of time and money, looks like they took my friends.
Oh ! Lord, I'm stuck in Lodi again.

The man from the magazine said I was on my way.
Somewhere I lost connections, ran out of songs to play.
I came into town, a one night stand, looks like my plans fell through
Oh ! Lord, stuck in Lodi again.

If I only had a dollar, for ev'ry song I've sung.
And ev'ry time I've had to play while people sat there drunk.
You know, I'd catch the next train back to where I live.
Oh ! Lord, I'm stuck in Lodi again.

John Fogerty Twitters A History of the Green River Album While Playing It in New York [Saturday, November 19, 2011]

John Fogerty has been a very active user of Twitter over the years and, Friday night [18.11.2011], he used the social network to fill in his audience at the Beacon Theater, and the rest of the world, on a history of the album Green River.

The concert is the second of two nights at the Beacon where he played Cosmos Factory in its entirety on Thursday and Green River on Friday. The following are his tweets with his thoughts on each of the cuts.

At about the age of eight, I became fascinated with the label on a soda fountain drink and it came to represent the whole mystical dimension of youth, freedom, nature, exploration, and life “on the river”.

COMMOTION - I love to play the train beat. It’s not so obvious in this song but that’s where it started. Even forty years ago, I was irritated by the fast pace and rapidly increasing information overload of modern life.

TOMBSTONE SHADOW - Sometime early in 1969, I played a show in San Bernadino, California. Right across the street from the hotel there was a little shop advertising “Fortune Teller”. I went in and got my fortune read. This song is a note for note replay of that experience.

WROTE A SONG FOR EVERYONE - The late sixties was, of course, a time of great turmoil in America and around the world. Politically and socially this new energy seemed to be affecting everything. As some of this conflict played out in our media you could watch famous people from the older generation having trouble communicating with the younger generation. I had in mind a so-called leader of millions who couldn’t even lead his own son.

That scene made a big impression on me.

LODI - This is another song title that I had carried around since my childhood, somehow knowing that I would someday write a song about it. I just liked the sound of it. Funny thing is though my family had traveled all around Northern California when I was young, I’m pretty sure that I had never been to Lodi.

It was a steam engine from by-gone days and this romantic and mythic vision has inspired me throughout my life. Thanks, Dad.

SINISTER PURPOSE - Ahhhh. A song about de Devil. I don’t believe I have ever played this live before.

Get it. Anyway, this song is one of the great songs on Ray’s record and a song I have been performing since high school.

Lyrics

Met myself a comin' county welfare line.
I was feelin' strung out, Hung out on the line.
Saw myself a goin', down to war in June.
All I want, All I want is to write myself a tune.

CHORUS:
Wrote A Song For Ev'ryone,
Wrote a song for truth.
Wrote A Song For Ev'ryone
And I couldn't even talk to you.

Got myself arrested, Wound me up in jail.
Richmond 'bout to blow up, Communication failed.
If you see the answer, now's the time to say.
All I want, All I want is to get you down to pray.

CHORUS

Saw the people standin' thousand years in chains.
Somebody said it's diff'rent now, look, it's just the same.
Pharoahs spin the message, round and round the truth.
They could have saved a million people, How can I tell you?

Lyrics

Tombstone Shadow, stretchin' across my path.
Tombstone Shadow, stretchin' across my path.
Ev'ry time I get some good news, ooh,
There's a shadow on my back.

Saw the gypsy man, 'way down in San Berdoo.
Said, I saw the gypsy man, 'way down in San Berdoo.
Five dollars on the table, ooh,
Keep me 'way from my tomb.

Said I got thirteen months of bad luck,
Bound to be some pain.
Don't you do no travelin',
Fly in no machines.
Tombstone Shadow, stretchin' across my path.
Ev'ry time I get some good news, ooh,
There's a shadow on my back.

The man gave me a luck charm, cost five dollars more,
Said, "Put some on your pillow, and put some on your door."
He said, "Take a long vacation, ooh,
For thirteen months or more."

Tombstone Shadow, stretchin' across my path.
Tombstone Shadow, stretchin' across my path.
Ev'ry time I get some good news, ooh,
There's a shadow on my back

Lyrics

When the sky is gray
And the moon is hate
I'll be down to get you
Roots of earth will shake

Sinister purpose
Knockin' at your door
Come and take my hand

Burn away the goodness
You and I remain
Did you see the last war?
Well, here I am again

Sinister purpose
Knockin' at your door
Come and take my hand

I can set you free
Make you rich and wise
We can live forever
Look into my eyes

Sinister purpose
Knockin' at your door
Come and take my hand

CCR oli bändi, jota kuunneltiin luokasta, kansallisuudesta, iästä, sukupuolesta, rodusta - jopa omasta musiikkimausta tai poliittisesta asenteesta riippumatta.

'How fundamentally badass is Creedence Clearwater Revival? They appeal to everybody over the age of embryo and younger than 102. Men and women. Whites, blacks, and all manner of ethnicity in between. Fancypants intellectuals and working class mulletheads. They're beloved for heavy rock songs with big, fat guitar tones, twangy, backporch country, and high, lonesome ballads. They were at heart a "singles" band, yet if you needed 'em to stretch out their choogle to 10+ minutes ... done.' - [ks. linkki]

John Fogertyn hyvä ystävä Bruce Springsteen kertoi, miten heidän kulmillaan New Jerseyssä [Nykin vieressä] Proud Maryn alkaessa soida jukeboxista jokainen tyyppi - kuuluipa sitten mihin tahansa jengiin - lopetti uhoilunsa ja alkoi kuunnella tuota biisiä tapaillen sen rytmiä, sanoja sekä melodiaa. Merkillinen tunnelma - kukaan ei rähissyt kenellekään Proud Maryn aikana.

Proud Mary - Creedence Clearwater Revival
*
Left a good job in the city,
Working for The Man every night and day,
And I never lost one minute of sleeping,
Worrying 'bout the way things might have been.

CHORUS:
Big wheel keep on turning,
Proud Mary keep on burning,
Rolling, rolling, rolling on the river.

Cleaned a lot of plates in Memphis,
Pumped a lot of pane down in New Orleans,
But I never saw the good side of the city,
Until I hitched a ride on a river boat queen.

CHORUS
Rolling, rolling, rolling on the river.

If you come down to the river,
Bet you gonna find some people who live.
You don't have to worry 'cause you have no money,
People on the river are happy to give.

CHORUS
Rolling, rolling, rolling on the river.

Willy and the Poor Boys on temaattisesti yhteiskunnallinen kannanotto. Siinä saavat oman laulunsa niin vangit [The Midnight Special], puuvillanpomijat [Cotton Fields], duunarit [Don't Look Now], Nixon, sotaherrat ja rikas eliitti [Fortunate Son, Effigy] kuin juntit, ufot, kommunistit, paavi, Hollywood ja silloinen Kalifornian kuvernööri 'Ronnie the Popular' eli Ronald Reagan [It Came Out Of The Sky].

Perinteinen shuffle-katusoittaja-bändi WPB/CCR toteutti Johnin musiikillisen mielikuvituksen ideat sympatiaa herättäen ja uskottavasti. Proud Maryn tapaan Down on the Corner'ista huokuu aseista riisuvan positiivista henkeä - aivan kuten myöhemmästä Centerfield'istäkin 1985.

3
[Interview]'You wrote “Fortunate Son” over 30 years ago and it still rings true, even more so today.'

'I am personally a very political person and of course, the fact that I came of age in the ‘60s…that’s probably not so remarkable. Especially for my generation, the group of people who are now called “boomers,” the late ‘60s was a very remarkable, creative, volatile, tumultuous and wonderful time. I think we literally believed we could change the world and, in some ways, we really did. I was very, very political. The Vietnam War was at its height, and I was very much aware that rich kids were not serving and certainly, lower, middle class and poor people were serving. I certainly took note that Richard Nixon’s offspring…I always had his daughter’s names wrong. I think Tricia was going with David Eisenhower. I thought, they’re never going to Vietnam. So literally in my mind, “A senator’s son” could have been any one of those people. As I said in the late ‘60s, Nixon was a source of unending inspiration [laughs] because he was just so evil to me. It was very noticeable that rich people waged the wars and poor people fought ‘em. The whole business about rich people complaining about taxes but they never pay ‘em…Ronald Regan became the patron saint of that years later. Weren’t there a few years where he paid zero taxes? You thought to yourself, “How in the world can this work” [laughs]? They were fortunate sons. They were the sons of well-heeled and connected people.' - http://www.americansongwriter.com/2007/01/john-fogerty-fortunate-songwriter/

I ain't no senator's son, son.

It ain't me, it ain't me;
I ain't no fortunate one, no.

Some folks inherit star spangled eyes,
Ooh, they send you down to war, Lord,
And when you ask them, "How much should we give?"
Ooh, they only answer More! more! more! yoh,

It ain't me, it ain't me;

"A real heavy political song. It's pointing the finger at the Nixon administration when they were crumbling. The dark period, if you will. We were able to get away with it by having the rhythm section that we had. If you wanted to get heavy and get into it, you could do that. If you didn't want to do that, you could dance all night and pick up a girl or do whatever. We covered all the bases and John would add his brilliant lyrics and took it a step forward." Don't look now, someone's done your prayin' too

Who will make the shoes for your feet?
Who will make the clothes that you wear?
